Versions of You
Happy Friday Everyone!
So happy to have you all back in-house this short week. Give yourself a little pat on the back for jumping back into the swing of things with gusto!
This morning I watched an Instagram clip of a conversation between Michelle Obama and Zaya Wade which was so cool. They discussed how kids in their teens can approach life, change, and things that are hard. The two of them touched on growth and challenge, and how the first doesn't happen without the second. I hope you'll have a watch...
Here is the link to their conversation!
Obama says, "Give yourself space and time to learn and grow...that means you want to try a lot of things on..." What a great sentiment! So much of my time spent with students over the years has really boiled down to this simple solution of trying things on to figure out what fits you.
Over the last 20 years, the flow of students who have come to me with worries or frustrations which sprout from this time of uncertainty has never slowed. That's because it's where you are in your human development. Some of the central questions for tweens and teens are: Am I normal? Who am I and where do I belong? and Where am I going? These are huge questions! (It's why you need adults like me, your teachers, and your parents to help support you along the way. You need partners as you figure out the answers to these big life questions).
I want you to know that all of this is normal and expected, and appropriate to your growth. If you weren't going through all of this it would be unusual. It's also important to note that this process starts earlier for some and later for others, so moving on your own timeline is okay too! Your path, your journey, will be as unique as you are, so don't try to compare it with those around you too much.
Most often what you need to do is just be in the moment, sit with the discomfort, embrace the challenge, know that time will sort out the confusion, and if simply stay true to yourself and your passions. The right way forward - and the right versions of you - will always present itself.
I hope you all have a great weekend!
Be Well,
Mrs. Hempey
