Rhapsodizing on Monday
Welcome to our last full school week of 2020!
I am really digging deep to get started this week, and I just need a little something that makes me smile and feel good!
I found this mish-mash this weekend, I hope you'll check it out and enjoy it as much as I did.
I am always curious when I hear Bohemian Rapsody about the meaning behind it, so today I looked it up and discovered that Freddie Mercury, who wrote the song in 1975, was fiercely protective of his lyrics ad their meaning. Therefore, the meaning behind this particular iconic ballad remains a mystery. Different folks have different guesses about his inspirations but what most seem to agree on is that Mercury was influenced by many factors, including his own life experiences, the music of others, different styles of music, and the people he came in contact with.
Many feel that the song has a fantastical element to it and that some of the lyrics are made-up words. I discovered that two of the words I was unfamiliar with do have meanings. Scaramouche, was a character in a 17th-century comedy who always managed to work his way out of tricky situations at the expense of others, and Bismillah is a Muslim term similar to our Anglo-American idea of "Grace," meaning "in the Name of Allah." (Duncan, 2018)
Today, I've put this song into my blog simply because it makes me happy and it was an uplifting way to start our week. But I do feel like some of the lyrics can apply to how we are feeling in these uncertain times. Since Mercury invited people to listen to his music and think about what it means to them - to find their own interpretation - I choose to think that the lyric, "Anyway the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me, to me," is a reminder that no matter what happens, it doesn't really matter to me because I will overcome it. (It being a drama, tragedy, problem, or personal issue). I choose to think that it means that no matter how the wind blows, I will find my strength and succeed.
I hope you will too!
Have a great day everyone,
Mrs. Hempey
