Can You Hear My Voice?

Happy Monday Students and Staff,

I saw this video on Saturday and I knew immediately that I wanted to share it with all of you.  I don't think I can link it directly into my blog, so you'll have to watch it here.

I love so much about this video.  I love Brody's facial expressions and the way he conveys the lyrics as he dances!  I love, Fight Song by Rachel Platten.  One of her very first lyrics is, "Like a small boat on the ocean, send big waves into motion."  In this video little bossbabybrody, however unintentionally, becomes that like that little boat.  He, (and millions of others too), doesn't hesitate to show the world just how special he is.  At four years old, he sets an amazing example of what it means to speak your truth (or dance it, in this case!).

Before you go getting sad about how hard it is to speak your truth sometimes, I want to acknowledge that middle school is a tough place to do it - not impossible, but usually what middle schoolers want most in the world is to fit in and to just blend into the scene.  So I want to say that if you don't feel like you can wake up each day and speak your truth yet, it's okay.  When the time is right for you to be 100% you, it will happen.

When you are ready to shine, you will - at whatever it is you choose to do or be!  In the meantime, know that you are amazing, you are capable, and you are special and made just the way you were supposed to be.

Today's question of the day in my Google Classroom asked students to finish this sentence: When I grow up I want to be...

I will probably get the typical answers like a writer or an artist, or a professional athlete, which are perfect because they will be someone's truth.  But I bet I'll also get answers that encompass some version of, "I want to be happy!"   I love this answer because there are so many ways to be happy.  How will you get there?  What kind of little wave maker will you be?

-Will you be the first female president?

-Will you be an adventure racer?

-Will you be a designer walking the runways in Paris, NY, and Milan?

-Will you be turning wrenches to help make the world work?

-Will you care for people and help them be healthy and successful?

-Will you break down barriers and smash stereotypes?

-Will you be a chef to celebrities and dignitaries or will you simply nourish those you love?

-Will you find a cure for something?

-Will you study ancient civilizations?

-Will you take time to twirl in spinny dresses and dance in the rain?

-Will you inspire others?  Will you inspire yourself?

I do hope so, and I believe in you!  Don't forget...

Have a great Monday everyone!

Be Well,

Mrs. Hempey
