Unlikely Friends
Happy Wednesday to you all!
Today I wanted to share a little story I ran across this summer about two unlikely friends...and their story of resilience. Have a watch...
I like this story for lots of reasons...
1. Animals are just cute...especially baby animals!
2. I love that the man who rescued the pair drove them 21 hours in what, a Volvo? Can you imagine passing them on the highway and seeing a cow staring back at you? I bet they got lots of double takes!
3. I love that there are people in the world who are willing to put their lives on hold to save animals. 'Cause really when you think about it, how many Marley's and Eli's are out there? There are plenty of cute animals that don't get a second thought. Also, how many people out there would have the attitude that they are just farm animals and not worth all the trouble. To be 100% transparent, I consider my self to be a pretty caring individual and I could not do what this man is doing for these animals. I think that the world probably needs lots more people like these folks who are rescuing those more helpless than themselves.
4. Marley...and...Eli! How cute are their names!
5. I like the idea they portray about being resilient. Do I think that animals really know what it means to be resilient? Well...I'm not so sure, but I do love that the story helps us to think about what it means to be resilient humans. To be resilient is to work hard when something is challenging, it is to have grit - a stick with it kind of attitude where you don't just give up after the first failure, and it is to have a growth mindset where you say things like, "I can't do this...yet!" Even though Marley and Eli aren't aware of what it means to be resilient, they are teaching us with their story. What a better time to be reminded that resilience is necessary than now when we are figuring out a new way to be in school.
6. I love that Marley is a boss who only drank Gatorade as a baby!
7. I loved Eli's happy kick of his heels when he felt the grass under his feet!
8. Most of all though, I love that Marley and Eli found each other and became an unlikely, yet amazing, pair of friends. I think that so often in middle school (and life really) we try to stick to what we know - to those we know. In doing this, we are potentially missing out on some really amazing experiences and people. This week, as we form core pods with possibly unfamiliar peers, I encourage you to open yourselves up to new friendships and those new experiences. Perhaps you don't know the folks in your pod group well, but I guarantee that you'll get to know them, and who knows, a life-long friendship could be made. And maybe those you are with won't become your best buddies, but in that case, I believe that you will all come out stronger and with more respect for those who reside in other social circles.
I hope you enjoyed watching this story as much as I did, and I hope you have an awesome Wednesday! If you are feeling stressed today, I'll leave you with this two-minute meditative video featuring what else but...a cow!
Be Well,
Mrs. Hempey
Both of the videos were so adorable! It's so cool to see a different side of the animals.
