When Things Fall Off The Plate!
Well, it's Thursday everyone, and you've all already gone home for the day. I should be on my way too, but I just wanted to talk quickly about when things, "fall off the plate."
We all have a lot going on, and if you are like me, you have more going on than you can possibly get done in a day. So how do we manage all of the balls in the air, and still sit down a the end of the day and feel good about the ones we dropped?
We prioritize - What is most important? What can't wait? Have I put value into human connection over tasks and paperwork. What needs to happen today, and what, realistically can happen tomorrow?
This is why I make a list each morning. Oftentimes, my lists overlap from day to day, and sometimes even week to week. Some projects are out on the horizon and all I need to do about them today is start visualizing them. Some things - like a crying student, or a crowded lunch duty, need my attention now. I keep my list well organized, use yesterday's to build today's, and today's to build tomorrow's, and I try to make sure I leave at the end of the day with the busy work ticked off.
We remember we are only human - There will always be more work to do, but we are human and we need to do things like play, and rest, and socialized, and eat, and generally take care of ourselves. So we have to give ourselves permission to say no or put some things on tomorrow's list. This doesn't mean procrastinate day after day. It just means that if you've had a busy and productive day, don't beat yourself up if you have to push some things off until tomorrow.
and we...
Focus on what we did accomplish - Give yourself a pat on that back for all you did during the day. Recognize that there are numerous things that you tackled and did well during this day, and be proud of your effort. Think about how you can parlay that effort today into momentum for tomorrow's successes.
I've stuck it out here until 3:30 today so I could finish my blog post. It's time to go home and cook dinner...take my kid to baseball...make sure everyone gets to bed clean and at a decent hour...wait what!?! I guess I have some more balls to juggle today!
Be Well Cougars,
Mrs Hempey
