Cougars Fly!
Happy Friday Cougars,
I am going to send you off into the weekend with a movie recommendation (you know how I love movies!). If you have the Disney+ Channel, you should check out Eddie the Eagle. (It is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and because some of the characters drink/smoke so please get permission from your parents). The movie is based on the true-life story of Eddie Edwards, a British citizen who, from his youngest days, wanted to be an Olympic athlete. Check out the trailer here...
I think the trailer explains it all...don't give up on your dreams, don't let others define you, stay positive and passionate, and be true to yourself! My family cheered out loud for Eddie while we watched this, and like other great sports movies, it's one that really moves you! One of the things I liked best about it was that winning wasn't Eddie's objective. What mattered to him was the taking part. The movie quotes Pierre Coubertin, who is thought of as the father of the modern Olympics.
Coubertin said, "The important thing in life is not to triumph but to compete. The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well."
Eddie embodies this spirit and reminds us all that the lessons and the learning come from the hard work and the dedication, not the trophies and the medals. This is true in sports, and it's true in life. So Cougars, remember - even when you don't feel good at something it's okay, just keep trying. Stay positive, take a different route, look at it from a different angle, ask for help, pay attention, stay engaged, stay curious, and above all else, believe in yourself and have fun!
Have a great weekend, Cougars! Let it fly!
