Movie Clip Inspiration

Happy Tuesday Everyone,

Today's question of the day in my Google classroom was what are some of your favorite movies of all time?  This got me thinking about some of my favorites movies.  I decided to search out some clips from a couple of favorites to share with you.

I love this clip from Remember the Titans. It gives me goose flesh every time I watch it.  I remember visiting this same battlefield when I was a sophomore in high school and my older sister was looking at colleges.  I love the coach's insistence that the players will learn to respect each other regardless of whether they like each other.  His deeper belief is that with respect, comes understanding, and with understanding, comes compassion.  This is an idea that comes up in my office a lot, and it is certainly still an issue in our communities and our country today.  We have to learn to put our differences aside, listen to folks that we disagree with, and find common ground to move us forward to a better place as a human race.

I love Mikey's speech here mainly because, to me, it always represented the ultimate sense of community and connection.  It represented being part of something bigger than yourself.  It represented adventure and the belief that you could do anything especially when you are supported by your friends.  My husband grew up about an hour from where this movie was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, and on one of my first trips there to spend time with his family we road tripped to Astoria and poked around the town.  I felt like a true Goonie!

Hoosiers is a basketball movie, so of course, I love it! It has so many great scenes, but I love the, "I'll make it," line from Jimmy.  It was one of his few lines in the movie, if not his only line.  I love that the scene represents Jimmy's belief in himself and his responsibility for his team.  I love the David vs. Goliath theme, as I always felt like a bit of an underdog myself when I was a kid.  I also loved the school and community spirit embodied within the clip.  When I was in high school, my senior superlative was most school spirit.  I loved that sense of community then, and I love it now too!  Cougars on three...one, two, three, Cougars!

I love this movie because it is about the idea that we can be anything we want in life, even if others don't necessarily have that same belief in us.   I love that Pai is a strong girl who is not willing to back down from what she believes and understands about herself.  Even in the face of her grandfather's insistence that she is not the chosen one, she carries on and teaches her family and community what it means to be a leader.

The Six Pack is a very obscure little movie that I used to watch when I was a kid, and I always loved the Rocky Top scene because to me it signified home and family and the idea that despite where you go in the world you should never forget where your roots are.   The movie is about a group of six siblings who befriend a race car driver with no family.  They become a family through their shared love of cars and teach each other about forgiveness and love.

There are so many good movies out there, and sometimes I wonder if I watch too many of them, but I think of movies as an art art form.  The best art evokes an emotion or takes you places in your mind that you might not otherwise go.

What have you watched lately that has inspired you or filled you with joy?  Feel free to share anything that is school appropriate in the comments.  I am always looking for a good movie to watch!

Be well, everyone!

  1. I was just quoting Goonies the other day! Great movie. As was Remember the Titans. Some of your other suggestions I will have to check out with my daughter. We always quote movies and try and "quiz" one another when we are apart we text the question and answer to make us feel closer. Most are inspirational, or funny quotes. But even if we happen to mention a sad or "ruff" quote from a movie, let's say for example, "You can't handle the truth!" at least it brings a smile to our faces to remember our togetherness. Movies are great social events and definitely reflect the time period and culture, so they are great teachers as well.
Thank you again for your blog,
