Standing on the Edge of Great

Happy Friday Everyone!

When I grew up, the TV was always on in our house.  My dad worked, and later owned, a business that sold home appliances like washing machines, stoves, refrigerators, and TVs.  Because of this my siblings and I had small TV's in our rooms at a pretty early age. (Check out the picture if the exact TV I had.  (Wow what a blast from the past!)

We also had a TV on our kitchen counter and a TV in the family room.  So needless to say, the TV's were always on in my home growing up!  However, as you can see, TV in the '80s and '90s, when I was growing up, was much different than it is now.  The small TV's in our rooms and on the kitchen counter only got channels 3, 5, and 22, and on a good reception day maybe PBS.  So we watched the news a lot.  We also watched day time soap-operas, weird, yes, I know!  We watched whatever sporting event was being broadcast live whether it be golf or tennis tournaments, basketball and baseball games, and if I got lucky some gymnastics or horseback riding!  We also watched shows like Little House

on the Prarie and MASH which came on every weekday at the same time.  Little House came on in the mornings, and MASH which was a favorite of my dad's that came on in the evenings.

The only TV in our house that eventually had cable was in the family room, and this for sure created some epic battles between my older sister, younger brother, and myself.  What to watch wasn't the only issue, it was also when to watch.  Back then you looked up what was playing in a newspaper or a magazine called the TV guide.  Gosh, darn if the two or three best shows of the week were playing at the same time on the same day!  You had to pick one, and hope the other stuff got rebroadcast again in the near future.  There were no shows on-demand, and no binging full seasons of a show in 24 hours.  We had to wait an entire week to see what happened next!  The worst was that once your favorite episode was over, you had to hope it got picked up in re-runs someday so that you could watch it again.

My family would gather around the TV each week to watch our favorite prime-time shows.   We would run to get snacks or use the restroom as quickly as possible during commercial breaks.  You didn't want to miss a minute.  There was no pause and no rewind on those shows!  Our family's love of the TV extended to movies as we got older.  Our shelves were filled with VHS tapes of our favorite movies that we could play over and over.

My family has a love of epic movie lines!  We can riff on our favorites to this day.  "It's our time...it's our time down here...Goonies never say die!"

Anyway, why am I telling you all this?  Good question!!  Despite enjoying this trip down memory lane, I'll get to the point, which is simple...I still love watching TV and movies!  As much as I love spending time in nature, or reading, or being active, I always have a good show or two cued up on Netflix that I am watching or preparing to watch.  I watch while I exercise in the morning, while I cook dinner in the evenings when I am cleaning the house or folding laundry on the weekends, and at the end of a busy day as well.  I will watch just about anything (except for scary movies or shows and shows that depict characters who break the law over and over and never learn their lesson or try to be better).

I like shows about cooking and baking, reality shows like Survivor and the Amazing Race, crime dramas where the "good guys" generally triumph over the the "bad guys," home improvement shows, live comedy, the news, a game show or two, Hallmark movies, live sports, and a good sitcom.  And to my whole point, I'll even watch shows targeted at teens and tweens.  Why, might you ask, do I watch content aimed at teens and tweens?  Well for a few reasons.  One is that I have kids who are almost tweens, so I like to know what they are watching.  Also, I like to know what kind of media you all are consuming, and lastly, like a good children's picture book, these YA shows often convey simple messages with important lessons that I can sometimes turn around and use to support my work with students.

All that information just to give you some context for the video I wanted to highlight today.  I watched the show, Julie and the Phantoms, (overall rating...maybe a B) on Netflix.  I really liked this song!

What a better way to jump into the weekend than with the idea that we are all standing on the edge of greatness and that this moment is yours to own!  Remember, you are awesome, so be awesome!

I hope you all have a great weekend!
