You Can Be...

Good Monday Morning Everyone,

On Saturday, as I watched Kamala Harris speak as the Vice President-Elect, I felt something that I have never felt before as a woman.  I am not sure I can even describe specifically how I felt because it's not that I haven't felt the feeling of possibility before, but I think it was a kind of increased possibility.  Or maybe it was a feeling of ultimate independence or shared responsibility  - the understanding that it's not just men that get to govern anymore.  It was the ultimate realization that women can have a seat at the table too!

Women have been allowed to vote now for a hundred years, and they have slowly made their way into the political discourse becoming legislators, representatives, and leaders in business and industry, but in top positions around our country, men still outnumber women.  Since women make up 50% of our population, doesn't it make sense that it's about time we see one at the top level of our government and our democracy?  It does in my mind.  Within our country, we are very divided about who should have run our country for another four years, and regardless of who you felt would have done the better job, or who you would have voted for, I hope we can all acknowledge that having a woman ready step in the Vice-President's office is historic and important for women and young girls everywhere.  I hope that it also means good things for other minority populations like people of color, members of the LGBTQ community, and those with differing religious views.

To this end, all of you young people should watch this video and think about what you want to be.

Do you aspire to the highest office in the land or do you want to be a teacher, astrophysicist, truck driver, or nurse?  Whatever your passion, regardless of your gender you can achieve it, and I hope you go after it with your whole heart!

Happy Monday and Be Well,

Mrs. Hempey
