To Do...To Be...To Laugh
Good Morning CBMS Students and Staff,
I have a little bit of this, and a little bit of that for you all this morning.
First, I want to give you a reminder of some self-care practices. I liked this little checklist, as it's very simple and quick.
Other essential tasks might be school work, choosing a fresh outfit, or brushing your teeth...anything that will make you feel more human and like you aren't stuck in a loop of Groundhog Days!
As for tending things...pets, siblings, or even your parents (they need hugs and reassurance too!) are all good options.
Sensory feelings are things you can smell or touch.
For me, spiritual practice means reading and thinking about wise words from others. Today I particularly liked these words from Brene Brown, a researcher who studies courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She offers this thought suggesting what kind of people we should try to be during this epidemic.
I have had many a conversation with students about what fear and anxiety does to our brains. Fear puts our brains into fight or flight mode because naturally, we want to protect ourselves. However, if you've assessed the situation and you are not in immediate danger, it's important to ground yourself (see the checklist above) and be intentional about choosing to be brave and kind, as Brown suggests.
We can take care of each other at this time. Work together rather than against each other. Another way that we can take care of each other is to share humor. I have seen lots of funny memes about school and teachers, kids and parents, and the self-isolation floating around my social media feeds. This humor is a good way to break the tension and make a difficult situation a little bit easier. Yesterday I got a good chuckle from this one...
